Died 12 Sep 1952  Linesville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA Find all individuals with events at this location
    • cause of death: bronchiectasis
    • from the September 26, 1963 issue of the Linesville Herald:
      CLAUD IRONS PASSES AWAY . . .
Funeral services in memory of Claud Irons were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Maryott Funeral Home, Linesville, with interment at Linesville Cemetery. He died Friday morning, September 12, 1952.
Rev. John P. Harris, retired Baptist minister officiated assisted by Rev. L.H. Norton, pastor of the Linesville Baptist Church. Bearers were Wendell, Morris and Carlton Irons, Calvin Thayer and Len and Park Wheeler, relatives of the deceased.
Mr. Irons was born December 22, 1876, the son of Mary Line and William Irons, of Conneaut township, and lived all his life in the Linesville area.
He was united in marriage with Miss Lena Wright, of Conneaut township, 44 years ago. A son, Charles, preceded him in death. Surviving him are his widow, five sons, Gordon, Winton, Howard and Gilbert of Linesville, and Robert, of Wilmington, Del., six grandchildren, two brothers, Frank and Clint, of Linesville, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Irons grew up on a farm but just before his marriage started the Irons Mfg Co., in what is now a double house across from the Pennsylvania depot. He manufactured crates, lawn swings, and other wooden products. While cutting timber a tree fell across his legs, badly crushing them between the knees and ankles. For some time it was despaired that he would ever walk again. His recovery took months.
After Mr. and Mrs. Irons were married they built a home which is the residence just north of the double house.
In 1911 he entered the rural mail service from which he retired February 11, 1938, after 27 years carrying mail. About the same time he started the chicken raising business with incubators in the basement of the property on West Erie street and as the business expanded erected the present hatchery. The hatchery has now been in operation 41 years. It grew every year of its operation and became a big industry. It was turned over to his sons in 1937 and through the years of work of both Mr. and Mrs. Irons and their family, the poultry industry here has expanded greatly. Pictures of it just recently appeared in a French Magazine.
Mr. Irons was a past president of the Lines Club, a member of the Baptist Church and a deacon and trustee of that church. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. Since his retirement he and Mrs. Irons have spent the winters in Florida at Palm Bay and later at Riviera Beach.
Always active in public affairs, Mr. Irons took great interest in the upbuilding of the community in which he and his family played such an important part.

    Notes
    • from the June 28, 1922 issue of the Linesville Herald:
Claude Irons has built a new hen coop 140x22 feet which will take care of 1,000 more hens than his former buildings would. He has need of more egg production as his hatchery has a capacity of 4500 chicks a week and requires 21 cases of eggs a week to keep it full.
    • from the December 26, 1923 issue of the Linesville Herald:
Claud Irons of he Linesville Hatchery rcently shipped 100 choice single comb white Leghorns to San Juan Porto Rico. This is the second shipment to the same customer in that distant land which helps to show this Linesville industry is getting on the map.
