    • from the December 19, 1893 issue of the Linesville Herald:
      A LINESVILLE BOY BATTLES
      A Highwayman by Shooting

The Greenville Argus is authority for the correctness of the story, circulated here the latter part of last week, that Fred Irons who learned the station railroad business at this place, and whose parents live near town, had shot a man who ordered "hands up." Although the use of firearms is not a branch of the railroad business if highway robbery gets thicker it would seem that a good "shooter" other qualifications being equal will have the call. The Argus says: Station Agent Irons, who looks after the E&P's business at Shenango, had an experience, Tuesday evening of last week he will not soon forget. He had closed the station after the last train north had passed and was proceeding toward his place of abode, when two men approached him and demanded "his money or his life," Mr. Irons, being of an econimcal turn of mind, hated to waste either and concluded that if there was any "holding up" to be done he would do it himself. There upon he drew a revolver and fired at one of his assailants. The man dropped but was quietly carried away by his pal, or pals, it being too dark to determine how many there were. That Irons hit his man is unmistakable, as the ground where the would be Highwayman stood was found to be covered (last line of of article unreadable) . . . .
