    • from a scrapbook at the Linesville Historical Society:
Ezra Scovel departed this life Monday morning, Feb. 4th, 1901, after an attack of la grippe lasting only forty-eight hours, which broke the single thread on which his life had hung for the past 15 years. He served three months in the civil war as drummer, returning home on account of illness from which he afterwards suffered, and had been on the pension roll for the past 16 years. He was 79 years and 14 days of age. Deceased was born in the State of Vermont, and moved to Conneaut township, this county, when a boy. He was married to Lydia M. Mantor, and afterwards went West with others to Iowa, going with ox teams which they used in breaking up prairie land and settling new country. From there he moved to Spring Valley, Minn., where he settled on another farm and remained a short time after his return from the army when he returned to this place and entered the tannery with his father, Daniel Scovel, where they continued in business for several years. He learned the shoemaker's trade in boyhood, and followed the vocation for many years prior to his retirement from business. Mrs. Scovel died Jan. 5, 1890. They were the parents of five children, two of whom were buried in infancy: Mrs. TC Frey, a daughter, died in July 1897; Mr. Scovel was married to Miss Sarah Johnson, Oct. 28th, 1897. His widow, a brother, Mr. Daniel Scovel of Seneca, Kansas; a sister, Mrs. Lovina Beardsley, and son D. M. and daughter Mrs. Belle Oswald this place, survive him. He united with the Congregational Church when a young man. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in ME Church, conducted by Rev. HH Clare, the GAR Post assisting in services.
