      JOHN A. VAN SICKLIN
      John Alair Van Sicklin died in Linesville at 7:30, March 3, 1918.
      He was born in New York city, March 8, 1837. He was the son of John A. and Sarah (Nodine) Van Sicklin of old Holland Dutch lineage and early settlers of New York.
      Mr. Van Sicklin came to Erie, Pa., while a young boy and was educated in the public schools of that city. He learned the miller's trade and was employed in that capacity at the outbreak of the war of the rebellion. The second day after Fort Sumpter was fired on he enlisted in Co B of regiment raised in Erie. He re-enlisted in the US navy and served on the gunboat Ottawa and participated in the attacks on Fort Royal, Fort Pulaski and Jacksonville, Fla. At the expiration of his service he returned home and was engaged for some time in the oil fields in Warren county. For many years he has been engaged in the hotel business at Springfield, Pa., Conneaut Lake and Linesville, well and favorably known throughout Western Penna. Honored and beloved by all who knew him - his friends are legion who will mourn his death.
      He was married to Sarah Parker, Elmira NY Oct. 25, 1865, who died in Linesville Sept. 26, 1906, five children were born to this union: Robert, Sadie and Kittie (Mrs. Kennedy) all deceased; survived by daughter Laura and son J. Elliott, both of Linesville. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. William B. Sherwood of Erie. He was an active member and color bearer of Linesville Post GAR NO. 358 under whose auspices the funeral was conducted Tuesday 2 p.m. March 5, 1918 from the home - the Traveler hotel, the Rev. JK McDivitt of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating.
