J. Addison Martin passed away at his home in Linesville May 6, 1937, the month of the 75th year of his age. He was born in South Shenango townhsip, Crawford County, Pa., May 14, 1862. His parents were Samuel and Ellen (Cunningham) Martin.
He was educated in the public schools and became a teacher. He left farming for a business career in general merchandise starting with Dennison's Jamstown, Pa., leaving there in 1888 and forming a partnership with his brothers, Fred and Arthur. They purchased the LT Heath general merchandise store and continued in business for 46 years in one location in the Tyler-Irons brick block at the southeast corner of Erie and Mercer streets.
After the deaths of Fred and Arthur the business was continued by Addison until he retired in 1934 after having been in failing health for some time and which continued until his death.
He was united in marriage with Miss May Brown in 1893 and she survives him. Deceased is the last of his father's family. Two nephews, Howard and Clark Martin, of South Shenango, were among the bearers which also included Eugene Bresslin, Williard Penfield, James Martin and William Bush.
Funeral services , Saturday afternoon, at the home, were conducted by Rev. JO Averill, pastor of the ME church and a former pastor, Rev. Harold Sloan, of Cambridge Springs, who paid high tribute to Mr. Martin, a member of the Linesville ME church and known among his business associates and all who were acquainted with him as an upright citizen in business and community.
He served a term as member of the borough council and at one time as burgess giving of his time and best efforts to community welfare.
Friends attended the funeral from South Shenango, Jamestown, Greenville, Conneautville, Conneaut Lake, Pittsburgh, Erie, New Castle, Alliance and Youngstown, Ohio.
The committal was made in the Linesville Cemetery.
