Funeral of George A. Garwood, Sept. 3
Local residents were shocked Monday to hear of the sudden death of George A. Garwood, local businessman, who passed away suddenly on Sunday night about nine o'clock. Mr. Garwood had been in poor health for years but seemed to be getting along fairly well and had been working right along. Within the past few months he had seemed to be improved.
He will be greatly missed not only in his home and in the community but in the business section of the village where he was daily in contact with his friends. Many will remember him for his kind words and his cheerful and cordial visits. At the Herald office he is missed, this Thursday morning, for he was a regular visitor each day and made it a point to help with any kindness that he could find to do. The writer worked with Mr. Garwood many years ago, and found him to be ambitious beyond his strength and always willing to do more than his share of any task at hand.
For ten years he was a salesman for the firm of A.B. Griffing & Sons, of this place, and his courteous and pleasing manner won for him friends wherever he was a visitor. As a salesman, Mr. Garwood, was exceptionally successful and his territory was covered in an efficient manner at all times. This work he was forced to give up on account of failing health.
Later he took up the insruance business in Linesville and followed this work up to the time of his death. He had been local tax collector for years and had served as a member of the school board. He was a member of Pine Lodge, F. & A.M., the Odd Fellows, the Pymatuning Club and was a regular attendant at the Universalist church.
George Anthony Garwood was born in Conneaut township, Crawfod county, August 1, 1879, and died at his residence in Linesville, Sunday evening, August 31, 1930. He was the son of Ella and Deforest Garwood and had lived his entire life in or nearby this place. March 1, 1904, he was united in marriage to Zatella Griffing and to this union were born three children: Clifford, who passed away, January 30, 1929, and Griffing and Stuart at home. Besides his wife and two sons he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ella Garwood, three brothers, Frank, Clarence and Norbert and sister, Mrs. S.B. Doyle.
Funeral services were held from the late residence, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, his pastor, the Rev. George A. Gay, officiating. Interment was made in the Linesville Cemetery, the committal service of the Masonic fraternity being conducted at the grave.
